Naknek, AK is a village of 678 permanent residents located on the north bank of the Naknek River. Tucked in the northeastern corner of Bristol Bay,  Naknek is 300 miles southwest of Anchorage.  Naknek is a neighbor to the scenic Katmai National Monument and is only a short drive from some of the world's best sport fishing.

Temperatures in Naknek can be very extreme with winter lows dipping well below zero and summer highs reaching into the upper eighties.  Average temperatures tend to be less dramatic with winter temperatures staying close to freezing and summer temperatures rising into the fifties and low sixties.  Total precipitation averages 20" annually including 45" of snowfall.

The first salmon cannery opened on the Naknek River in 1890. More than half a century later Allen Nelson opened a saltery on the site of the current Alaska General Seafoods plant.  Nelson operated the saltery until the mid-fifties, after which time he leased the property to American Packing Company.  American Packing Co. operated a floating cannery at the site until the late 1950s.  In the late fifties Nelson Brothers Fisheries (no relation to Allen Nelson) purchased the American Packing Co. operations, and at a later time purchased the land  from Allen Nelson. The cannery was operated as Nelbro Packing Company until 1999 when Nelbro Packing Co., Kanaway Seafoods, and Alaska General Processors combined to form Alaska General Seafoods.
