Where we are
located: The Ketchikan Facility is located on Revillagigedo (Revilla
for short) Island in the city of Ketchikan in the Southeast region of
Alaska. The only way to get to Ketchikan is by water or by air.
Housing: AGS provides bunkhouse space for employees
working at the Ketchikan plant for a nominal fee. The bunkhouses are
modern facilities with shared bathrooms and laundry facilities. You must
be 18 years or older to reside in the bunkhouses. There are no co-ed
or married bunkhouse facilities. Meals are served in the AGS messhall
three times a day, with snacks served during break periods. If you do
not plan to live in the bunkhouse, please be aware that there is very
limited housing in Ketchikan during the summer and even less camping
space (none close to AGS). Also, if you plan on bringing a vehicle, please
note that there is very limited parking at AGS, and camping or sleeping
overnight in vehicles is not allowed. AGS strongly recommends that you
not bring a vehicle with you to Ketchikan. Pets are not allowed on the
AGS premises.
Hours: The Southeast Alaskan salmon season runs from
approximately June 25 to September 5. Depending on the number of returning
employees, most 1st year people are hired for the 2nd crew whose first
day of work is approximately July 20-21st. The number of days you will
be working depends upon the season's catch and can vary from year to
year. There are no guaranteed minimum hours. The number of hours worked
depends upon the strength of the salmon run. For most people the average
workday begins at 8:00am and ends at 11:30pm and the average workweek
is 7 days long. Also, most of the jobs require that you be on your feet,
so be prepared for a physically demanding schedule. Any protective gear
that is necessary for your job will be provided for you.
Transportation: The Alaska State Ferry departs from
Bellingham, WA and Prince Rupert, BC. The sailing from Prince Rupert
is less expensive than the Bellingham sailing, although you may have
to drive some extra miles to get to Prince Rupert. Reservations can be
made with the Alaska Marine Highway at 1-800-642-0066 or by visiting
their web site.
Alaska Airlines reservations can be made by calling
1-800-225-1000 or by visiting their web site.
If you fly to Ketchikan, there are a few different
methods to get from the airport (on a different island linked by ferry)
to AGS.
Take a cab or a shuttle.
Take the ferry from the airport
and then catch the "The
Bus".
Take the ferry from the airport and then walk to AGS
(a good way to see the city).
